Leggera Technologies, LLC, a large structural automotive parts design, engineering and manufacturing company, announces opening its new headquarters in Orion Twp., Oakland County, Michigan. The facility will also house Leggera’s development and manufacturing operations, which produces cross car beams, inner closures such as doors, lift gates and swing gates, infotainment housings, seat frames and pans, grill opening reinforcements and more.

Nathan Sanko and Tom Darnell founded Leggera Technologies in 2014. The company will invest $17 million in the new facility in Orion Twp., Michigan and expects to create approximately 50 new jobs within five years as a result of the investment.

“We are so pleased to open our new facility in Michigan. The cooperation among the state and local officials, as well as the strong business environment in Michigan, made our decision to locate in Oakland County an easy one,” says Nathan Sanko, CEO, Leggera Technologies.

Establishing a presence in Michigan puts Leggera closer to its OEM automotive customers for whom its magnesium thixomolding (injection molding) technology is well suited. While thixomolding uses magnesium as its source material, it is distinctive from die-cast magnesium. Precision injection molded magnesium (thixomolding) meets the needs of OEMs by delivering net shaped parts, superior material properties, incredibly tight tolerances, thinner walls and lower draft angles, which all result in stronger, lighter-weight parts compared to those that are die-casted.

“With our magnesium thixomolding technology, we can innovate and develop cost-effective, advanced light-weight products for our customers,” said Sanko. “A good example is developing the Magnesium Polymer Hybrid Composite Tire Carrier for the Jeep® Wrangler that recently won 2018 Process, Assembly & Enabling Technologies Innovation Award at the Society for Plastics Engineers (SPE) annual Automotive Innovation Awards Gala.”

“The market for sophisticated systems is expanding rapidly and vehicle manufacturers challenge us to incorporate multiple functions, materials and components in their systems,” said Sanko. “Leggera’s leadership position in automotive magnesium thixomolded systems gives us the opportunity to collaborate in developing the solutions to meet challenges.”

Leggera has a history of providing its customers with cutting-edge technology, innovative processes and quality products through proven systems. “The future of magnesium thixomolded applications makes it important for our headquarters to be located in Auburn Hills, Michigan,” explains Boney Mathew, COO of Leggera Technologies. “Our proximity to OEM customers, such as FCA, Ford, General Motors and Rivian, can impact how quickly new methods and applications are accepted. This shortened time frame will benefit Leggera’s development and manufacturing efforts in terms of large tonnage thixomolding machines and a fully automated state-of-the-art powder coating line.”

About Leggera Technologies, LLC
Leggera Technologies, headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan, employs engineers with OEM-level experience, so they understand its OEM customers’ needs. The company’s precision injection molded magnesium technology (thixomolding) is perfectly suited to the needs of OEMs in today’s environment. Although thixomolding uses magnesium as its source material, it is distinct from die-cast magnesium. Thixomolding delivers net shaped parts, superior material properties, incredibly tight tolerances, thinner walls and lower draft angles, resulting in stronger, lighter weight parts compared to die-casting. Leggera focuses on structural automotive parts, such as cross car beams, inner closures and steering column mounts. Leggera provides the greatest value in re-designing or designing from scratch a magnesium solution where the incumbent part is die-cast magnesium, aluminum or steel, particularly if they are multiple part assemblies that can be combined and molded as a single part.
